A millefleur period inspired art piece, deliberately obscure and mysterious. The woman is strong and vulnerable at the same time. It is unclear whether she is guarded or guardian or whether the tiger is wild or tame. The garden is an oasis of order and peace in the chaotic jungle suggesting that the rules of the jungle do not apply.

A teapot made from mulberry papermache with a mounted papercutting. The cutting shows a pond with turtles. One turtles sits on a log and lifts up his feet with the desire to fly like the butterflies and dragonflies. The other turtle is diving into its element, the water, where it is content. In the water the turtle feels weightless, whereas on land the turtle feels immovable and heavy. The teapot will be shown at the Mobilia Gallery in Cambridge MA. My teapot will be exhibited in the group show teapot-redefined.

The inside of the pot contains a ‘secret’. The lid is is reminiscent of the shape of a lotus flower. The center a cutout of a sun from a Chinese good luck paper.

Flying under and over the sea

Turtles and cranes are symbols for long life but live in very different elements: air and water. Turtles cannot escape the ocean, whereas cranes can fly unhindered everywhere they wish, so we may think. Cranes cannot explore the depth of the ocean whereas sea turtles do exactly that. Both, cranes and turtles are separated in life but related in spirit.

Polar star — out of Balance

Polar bears are creatures of the North that are affected by the changes in the climate. Soon we will think of them only as mythical creatures like the ones seen in the stars on the firmament. Nature and culture begin to fall out of balance.

Prey and Predator are all beautiful and beastly at the same time, but without both the system would collapse. The viewpoint of the viewer of my pictures of the mandala series is important, and the pieces force viewer to consider the opposite viewpoint.

The fox is dreaming about his existence. He has front legs of a rabbit and not those of a fox because he feels sympathy for the rabbits that he eats and tries to relate to them (evoking the proverb: “to be in someone else’s shoes”). When you look at his eyes, you can see that one of the eyes looks sad and the other look vicious, as if he would have bipolar disorder. So you can see in his eyes the yin/yang that’s in every creature. The forest that surrounds the fox shows the life cycle of the rabbit.

Rattle Race

Even snakes want to be loved (heart shapes in scales), the environment is only whole with all members including rattlesnakes and their prey, the ground squirrels. This piece depicts life in the Sonoran desert, and when watched from far looks like the sun where the large trees and cacti are the sun rays.
